Top US Career Institutes: What Training Actually Pays, and Who Can Study There

Nursing associate degrees report close to $90,000 on under $11,000 of debt — better than almost any master's. But most career programmes are a weak study-abroad route, and this explains exactly why.

"Top career institute" lists are usually written by the institutes. This one is built from the US Department of Education's earnings file, which reports what graduates of a specific programme at a specific school actually earned a year after finishing.

It produces some genuinely surprising results — and one hard conclusion for international students that most of these lists never mention.

What the data covers

From the College Scorecard Field of Study file, updated 2 November 2026, we took the two credentials career and technical training actually awards:

  • Undergraduate certificates — 42,739 programmes, of which 2,961 report earnings from a cohort of 50 or more.
  • Associate degrees — 40,471 programmes, of which 2,455 do.

The typical programme is not what the top of a table suggests. The median certificate programme reports $23,336; the median associate programme reports $34,270. The ranges are enormous — $5,512 to $87,754 for certificates.

Associate degrees: nursing is in a league of its own

Santa Barbara City CollegeRegistered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing$80,727$17,32865

Registered nursing takes almost every top place, and the debt column is the reason this matters. Several of these programmes report median earnings near $90,000 against median debt of $10,000 or less. There is no master's degree anywhere in the federal file with a ratio like that.

And nursing has an immigration dimension most people miss. USCIS lists professional nurses and physical therapists in Schedule A, Group I — occupations for which the Department of Labor has already determined there are not enough US workers, so no individual labor certification is required for an employment-based green card. That removes the PERM stage entirely. We cover what that means in our PERM and I-140 guide.

The part these lists never tell international students

This is the section to read before you get excited about the numbers above.

  1. The school must be SEVP-certified to issue you a Form I-20. Many community colleges are. A large number of private career and vocational schools are not. If a school cannot issue an I-20, there is no F-1 route to it, whatever its earnings data says.
  2. Certificates are usually not STEM OPT eligible. The 24-month extension depends on the CIP code on your I-20 appearing on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Most short vocational certificates do not qualify — see our OPT and STEM OPT guide.
  3. Licensed occupations have a second gate. Nursing, and many allied health roles, require a state licence, and for foreign-educated nurses that normally means credential verification, an English test and the NCLEX. The degree is necessary but not sufficient.
  4. These earnings are US-wide. They are not predictions for an international graduate who must also clear work authorization.
The honest summary. This data is extremely useful if you already have US work authorization — a green card holder, a citizen, an H-4 EAD holder or an L-2S spouse. As a study-abroad route from India it is far weaker than a STEM master's, because the work authorization path after it is usually shorter or closed. Both of those are true at once.

How to check an institute before you pay

  1. Is it accredited, and by a recognised accreditor? Check the Department of Education's database, not the school's own claim.
  2. Is it SEVP-certified? Check ICE's Certified School List if you need an I-20.
  3. What does its programme report on College Scorecard — earnings, debt and cohort size? Look up the exact programme, not the school's average.
  4. What is the CIP code, and is it on the DHS STEM list?
  5. If it is a licensed occupation, what does the state board require of foreign-educated applicants?
  6. Treat a missing programme as unknown, not as bad. Small cohorts are suppressed for privacy.

What we have not published

We have not ranked institutes overall, published completion rates, or listed tuition for these programmes. We have also not named any institute as "best" — we have ordered programmes by one measurable variable and shown you the cohort size behind each figure so you can judge how much weight it carries.

Questions

Which US career programmes pay best?
By median earnings one year after completion, associate degrees in registered nursing dominate — several report close to $90,000 with median debt under $11,000. Among certificates, allied health diagnostics, electromechanical technology and the skilled trades lead, with several above $70,000.
What does a typical certificate or associate programme actually pay?
The median certificate programme reports $23,336 and the median associate programme $34,270. The top of any table is far above typical — certificate earnings in the file run from $5,512 to $87,754.
Can an international student study at a US career institute on an F-1 visa?
Only if the school is SEVP-certified and can issue a Form I-20. Many community colleges are certified; a large number of private vocational schools are not. Check ICE's Certified School List before paying anything.
Are certificate programmes eligible for STEM OPT?
Usually not. The 24-month STEM OPT extension depends on the CIP code printed on your I-20 appearing on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and most short vocational certificates do not appear on it.
Why does nursing matter for immigration?
USCIS lists professional nurses and physical therapists in Schedule A, Group I — occupations where the Department of Labor has already determined there are insufficient US workers. Those petitions do not require an individual labor certification, which removes the PERM stage from the employment-based green card process.
Is a US career certificate a good study-abroad route from India?
Generally it is weaker than a STEM master's, because the work authorization path afterwards is usually shorter or closed — most certificates are not STEM OPT eligible and many vocational schools cannot issue an I-20. The earnings data is far more useful to people who already hold US work authorization.
Do I need a state licence as well as the qualification?
For licensed occupations such as nursing and many allied health roles, yes. Foreign-educated applicants typically face credential verification, an English language test and a licensing exam such as the NCLEX. Check the requirements of the specific state board.
Why is a particular institute missing from your tables?
Most often because its cohort is too small. The Department of Education suppresses figures drawn from small groups to protect privacy, and we additionally excluded any programme with a cohort under 50. Absence is not evidence a programme is poor.
